New Years is the big holiday in Japan, not Christmas.  Instead of Christmas cards, they send Happy New Year's cards.   Most people (including us) send regular postcards they sell in the store for about $1 each.  They are nicely printed (you can get personalized one's, too, or print your own message on them) and prestamped.  If you mail them the week before New Year's Day, the post office will save them up and deliver them the morning of New Year's Day between two and six a.m.  It's fun to wake up and go to the door to see your stack of cards wishing you well in the New Year!

That was was a beautiful flash picture of sunrise with Mt Fuji and cranes.  I don't know how long the link will last, but it's cool.
